Painting Trip to Southeast Coast of Fujian, 福建写生

Late November 2013, with some painting pals, I made my first ever painting trip to Fujian, a southeast coastal province of China... fascinating places across the Taiwan Strait

Few of on-the-spot sketches posted below

Yunshuiyao, Nanjing 南靖,云水谣镇(原名长教村)
Surrounded by a small Changjiao creek, Yunshuiyao is an tranquil village over 600 yrs old peacefully nested in a lush valley. It is well know with it's Tulou, a unique cylindrical style fort architecture constructed with wooden inner structure and clay in ancient times.

Paintings From Far Away -1

Back in town last week.
Posted here are few on location studies that I did on painting trips to Hunan and Anhui Provinces, southeast China.

安徽 屏山村
Pingshan Village, Yi County, Anhui Province. Peacefully nested in a valley, less than 60 miles west of the famous Mt. Huangshan ( Yellow Mountain ), the Pingshan village was established way back around 400 AD, flourished in Song dynasty, about 1000 AD. Today, over two hundred historical houses from Ming and Qing Dynasties are still standing and well kept as fine examples of Hui architecture and as silent witnesses of ancient China.

Field studies in High Sierra -1

Those are some of the field studies I did on my first ever painting trip in eastern Sierra mountains.
In the last week of Sept., with two CA friends Bob Vogel and Jason Situ, I went up to Sierra Nevada mountains - Lone Pine, Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, finally Yosemite... to paint.
The fall scenery up there was absolutely breathtaking - definitely a painter's paradise.

A Common Vision

A New Book by PAPW painters
just came out

Plein air painting is an extraordinary thing. We go outdoors, set up an easel, palette, and other tools and then attempt to capture the scene before us on a canvas. Plein air painters appreciate the subtleties of light, values, edges, color and movement that can only be experienced directly by “being there”. They hope to breathe the reality of this direct experience into each painting. The paintings in this book are a combination of plein air and studio paintings created by the members of PAPW. 100 color images.

sketching charleston,sc

Finally got around to post few sketches that I did in Charleston, SC. - my first trip ever to Charleston. It's quite an old but charming coastal town, full of history and cultural. I went up there to see Jason Situ's show, and got to paint with him for couple of days. It was a fun trip.
